Nisg̱a’a Language Jurisdiction
Home Our Language Nisg̱a’a Language Jurisdiction
The Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government can make laws to preserve, promote, and develop Nisg̱a’a culture and Nisg̱a’a language — including laws to authorize or accredit the use, reproduction, and representation of Nisg̱a’a cultural symbols and practices, and the teaching of Nisg̱a’a language. This does not include jurisdiction to make laws in respect of intellectual property, the official languages of Canada, or the prohibition of activities outside of Nisg̱a’a Lands.
In the event of an inconsistency or conflict between a Nisg̱a’a law and a federal or provincial law, the Nisg̱a’a law prevails to the extent of the inconsistency or conflict.
